Robert Webber began his career in telecommunications with GTE and AT&T, rising rapidly from software engineer to director in an R&D department of over 1500 engineers. Robert was introduced to the unique behavioral science approach of Aubrey Daniels International (ADI) as part of a major culture change to improve quality. Positive reinforcement for applying best software engineering practices was embedded within the development process, resulting in national recognition for software quality.
Robert continued his career with three startup organizations, the most recent as CEO. He leveraged ADI’s analytical organizational behavior model to build highly motivated, innovative engineering teams. His last company received the Microsoft Life Sciences Innovation Award for work with Harvard Clinical Research.
Following acquisition of his last company, Robert joined Construx Software as a Senior Fellow. Construx is a renowned software engineering training and consulting company led by Code Complete author Steve McConnell. In addition to providing seminars on project management and innovation, Robert provided software development assessments and recommendations for Fortune 500 companies.
Many clients felt they had not achieved the highly motivated self-directed teams promised by Agile development. Robert, with his background in ADI’s behavior model, recognized that management wasn’t trained to change from the directing and controlling management style of Waterfall to the servant-leader model required for self-directed teams. Development productivity had actually decreased. This led to collaboration with ADI behavioral scientists to create practices, training and consulting on motivation and innovation for engineering leaders.
Robert has an electrical engineering degree (honors) from the University of British Columbia. He is the recipient of five patents, and an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Technical Achievement Award (AMPAS). He is an author of Unlocking Agile’s Missed Potential, published by Wiley-IEEE Press in 2022.
